A macadam (tarmac) sports surface represents one of the most robust and economical choices of synthetic sports facility available and can be used for almost every recreational sport. For enhanced performance, the tarmac course can also be sprayed with an acrylic coating to provide a non-slip surface with extended lifespan.
A tarmac sports surface is a two-layered construction featuring a graded macadam base and wearing course providing a porous, frost-resistant surface. Water percolates quickly through the wearing course allowing play to resume soon after rainfall.

Blakedown Sport & Play are a long-established civil engineering company specialising in synthetic sports surfaces of every type including tarmac. Over our fifty years of operating, we have built tennis courts, netball courts, basketball courts, volleyball courts, MUGA's, playgrounds, and skateparks using this diverse material.
Our services include everything from the ground up: excavation, drainage, base works, laying of tarmac course, spraying of sports lines, installing floodlighting and fencing, and we can complete a project with parking facilities, spectator stands and stanchions, hard and soft landscaping, and access roads.
Blakedown Sport & Play have been continuously employed by Blackpool Borough Council to install a number of new build and refurbishment projects at various community and school sites.
These constructions involved installing both tarmac and polymeric sports surfaces for tennis, basketball, netball, mini-soccer, mini-hockey, and volleyball use and in each case included secure fencing with recessed goals, rebound boards, and a variety of goals and equipment.
Locations completed: Claremont Park, Roseacres School, Bispham Endowed School, St Mary's School, Boundary School, Ancorsholme School, Woodlands School, St George's High School, Stanley School.
Blakedown were appointed by Thomas Lord Audley School in Essex to fully refurbish their 60 x 35m hard courts. The new sports surface features a colour theme to match the 2012 London Olympic Games.
Due to a large number of cracks and sunken areas across the old courts, the existing tarmac surface was planed off, and the stone sub-base re-graded. Blakedown installed a new drainage system, laid the tarmac, and then coated the new courts with blue and pink acrylic. Sports lines for netball were sprayed in yellow, and sockets and posts meeting International Netball standard were fitted.
