Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council (now Shropshire Council) employed Blakedown to convert an existing 400m Redgra athletics track at the London Road Sports Centre into a polymeric athletics track with a porous system laid onto an Engineered base, including installation of a new drainage system. The updated track, used by Shrewsbury Athletics Club and Shrewsbury College of Arts & Technology as well as the local community, meets International Athletics Federation (IAAF) performance standards.
The redevelopment included an improved and extended javelin runaway, resurfaced shot-put area, hammer and discus throw areas, a water jump, long and high jump areas, and pole-vault fan.
The project was completed with a new floodlighting system, post-and-rail spectator fencing, chainlink perimeter security fencing, tarmac footpaths, and a spectator mound using the excavated soil from the track redevelopment works.
