Five Islands School
Sand-dressed and Polymeric Games Areas
Blakedown have constructed two multi-use games areas at Five Islands School on the Isles of Scilly. The first games area was surfaced with sand-dressed artificial turf with seamed sports lines for hockey and tennis. The chosen playing surface was Desso’s Trophy turf.
Client: Kier Western (Main Contractor)
Contract Type: Sub-contract
Build Time: 8 weeks
The second games area was surfaced with a green-coloured polymeric and had spots lines for netball and football. All building materials required for the project, plus Blakedown’s own construction machinery, were sourced from the mainland and had to be shipped from Penzance to St. Mary’s Island. To ensure work was completed smoothly and efficiently, Blakedown put 10 day shift patterns in place for all on-site staff involved in the project: allowing both MUGA’s to be completed in only eight weeks.
The school was part of a £13million re-building project and was visited by the Queen and Price Phillip upon completion, the Royal Family’s first visit to the island in forty-six years.
