What are ‘Compact’ Athletics Facilities?

The term refers to a system of athletics facilities provision designed to increase accessibility to athletics particularly in urban areas, to offer an affordable alternative to full-size running tracks, to establish a blueprint for the construction of athletics facilities in tight or restricting spaces, and to provide an athletics surface that more suitably caters for younger users.

The concept has been designed to offer facilities planners a construction kit of individual parts that can be selected and put together to best suit the needs of the space and users of every individual site.

Components of a compact facility

The ready-designed parts that can be selected and modified for a compact facility include a choice of sprint straight lengths and number of lanes, long and triple jump pits with separate or shared run-up straights, high jump areas, jogging routes, standing jump areas, ball and discus throwing facilities, and mini-sports pitches.

The concept also includes custom-designed equipment and sports furniture such as turning boards, spectator seating, equipment storage units, floodlighting schemes, modular changing blocks, and fencing.

Case Study | Stoke Newington School

Blakedown Sport & Play were very proud to have completed the first ever compact athletics facility at Stoke Newington School in east London. The design included a blue and black coloured eight-lane sprint track, three-lane long and triple jump straights with sand pit, spectator benches, sheltered seating area, three shot put circles with landing zones, and 250 and 500 metre jogging trails around the school.

The project is not only the first compact athletics track, but also the first ever athletics facility in the borough of Hackney. The track was officially opened by 400 Metre World Champion and double Olympic medallist Christine Ohuruogu, with England Athletics, UK Athletics, Sport England, the London Marathon Trust, and Hackney Borough Council also in attendance.
